Caffeine doesn't make you awake — it hides that you're tired
Caffeine is shaped so much like adenosine, your body's tiredness signal, that it fits the same receptors — and simply blocks them. The tiredness is still there in full; it just can't register.
That's why it masks fatigue instead of removing it, and why the crash hits when it wears off and all that backed-up adenosine floods in at once.
